I tend to get pretty cerebral about what I listen to. Can handle just about anything except for gangsta rap or CW. Can even handle opera, if the performer has the pipes for it.
Classical? Paganini, Bach...love listening to Midori and Hilary Hahn on the violin...those women are amazing.
Contemporary? Yoko Kanno and the Seatbelts (Cowboy Bebop, baby!).
Off the wall? Terrafolk. Definitely. Managed to see them live in Ljubljana. Sold out show. No less than 3 encores. Even got the t-shirt...and 3 CDs. Amazing group. Be sure to check out their site (http://www.terrafolk.org).
Books? Umberto Eco...The Name of the Rose, Foucault's Pendulum, Serendipities: Language and Lunacy, you name it. Richard Feynman (have read the boxed set of the Lectures on Physics...if you've ever had any problems figuring out how the world really works, these'll fix em). Pihkal (Alexander & Ann Shulgin...a chemical love story). Ilya Prigogine (From Being to Becoming).
TV Shows? Only watch TV about 2-3 hours a week. Like the new Battlestar Galactica. Having a convincing storyline always helps, and the cast is excellent. Really first-class. The effects rock, too. Have the DVD set for all 5 seasons of Babylon 5, as well. Stracynzki really knows how to tell a convincing story. Cowboy Bebop. Ah, yes, the one anime show that actually makes it through the lost-in-the-translation barrier and picks up speed. Loved it.
Movies? What the Bl**p Do We Know. A must-have in any DVD collection. Saving Grace. Has the absolute best solid-stream monologue rant I've ever heard in my life. Blade Runner was about the only book-to-movie conversion of Philip K. Dick's work that I really enjoyed. The rest were kind of weak. |
