Hi
I live in the UK, now a city dweller after many years in the country. I am a writer and film maker and a lover of all kinds of regional/ethnic/roots musics ( though not exclusively ) It always seems strange to me to talk about music being an 'interest' since it is so central to my being that decribing it as a hobby is a tad inadequate!. I am especially interested in American history and culture and the way music plays such an integral part in the above, something I tired to integrate into my film Letters From Nebraska.
I am currently working on a project about the great English visionary artist/poet William Blake which I hope will eventually see the light of day as a film. Blake was an extraordinary person in all regards and a fascinating subject.
Among my musical touchstones are: Ry Cooder, Martin Simpson, Nick Drake, Steve Earle, Hank Williams, Richard Thompson, Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris, Tom Waits, Gillian Welch and Ray Davies, Roxy Music, Lou Reed, Levon Helm and Sacred Harp singing
Among the film makers I admire are John Ford, the Coen Brothers, Walter Hill, Peter Greenaway, Sam Peckinpah, Ken Russell, John Sayles and the 'Ealing' comedies.
Literature-wise - a mixed bag: Tim Willocks, Arthur Conan-Doyle, Thomas Traherne, HP Lovecraft, Ian Rankin, George Herbert and William Blake to name but a few.

I am very interested in spending some time in the US on a working visit, perhaps in a writing/lecturing capacity re: film, literature or culturally-related subjects. Likewise if anyone likes the idea of a UK columnist to make cross-cultural contributions to US publications please get in touch!
