In my dream, in the land my family owns was revealed a place thereunto hidden to me, and there was construction upon it that I went to see, amid a teeming jungle of the character of humid equatorial climes. I had first to pass an enormous tree, every branch dwarfing the trees around it. I went up in that tree, and saw jewel-like insects dancing on strands of spider silk, and a troubled, shuffling pidgeon that seemed to hold me in wary familiarity. Later down the track there were whole houses on the land that I had thought abandoned to paperbark trees and swampwater; whole houses of sweeping size and inviting sightings through bay windows, all mansions with the feeling of forest cabins. I came at once to a marvellous pond, lilly-covered and serene, bordered on the far side by an ancient wall of stone figures and shapes, long overgrown by the forest. In my mesmerised transit of this pond I was met by an absurdly friendly primate, whose proximity to me soon began to disturb me. He followed me as I walked away, and caught me up in a fierce hug. In his friendly eyes I began to see flickers of desperation and darker rage the more I attempted to flee, but I have no idea what would have transpired of this incipient rage for soon he was stabbed in the back by the girl with whom I was travelling. I drew the blade out of the now lifeless primate, and wished with the hardest of sadness that the girl had inflicted only a wound of crippling. Distressed, I looked up to find an old couple had been sitting watching, and they were shaking their heads because they had been friends with that primate. |
