College professor (geography); Jazz musician/composer. Pacifist.

I strongly dislike automobiles and automobile culture. The terror attacks around the globe since 2001 are horrible, but millions die each year around the world in car accidents. Where is the war against *that* terror?

Getting the news by shortwave radio ROCKS, especially BBC and Radio Netherlands.

This quote By Dr. Hans Blix is so true:
"Bush declared war as a part of the U.S. war on terror, but instead of limiting the effects of terror, the war has laid the foundation for even more terror."

I'm accused (correctly so) of being impulsive, especially when cooking or offering an opinion.

Most importantly, I love it when I have to admit that I am wrong because it happens so often.

On composing music: an interesting composition involves a collection of parts that create a whole that is greater than the sum of the parts, but the parts must each stand on their own to be relevant. Most of my compositions are quite linear; the most common intervals are seconds, sevenths, and fourths. The Norwegian composer Terje Rypdal, upon listening to a crummy demo tape of mine about 20 years ago, kindly advised me to ". . . allow the melody, etc. to breathe." I have taken that comment to heart. That's JAZZ.

I find quite interesting this quote by Bill Dixon: "I think people who sample are cheating. It is like people who do collages. Use all of your own stuff."
