It's a bad old world. But it can't be all bad if it includes Smokey Robinson, Beethoven, "Spaced", Antoni Gaudi, "This is Spinal Tap", astronauts, Kanye West, fresh garlic, The Beatles, Public Enemy, The Marx Brothers, Jonathan Franzen's "The Corrections", Woody Allen, Jeremy Paxman and critical news reporting, "Fight Club", PG Wodehouse, Mahler, roasted flat field mushrooms, Neil Young, Johnny Cash (especially the "American" recordings with Rick Rubin), "Shaun of the Dead", George Orwell, Lee Child novels which simply aim to entertain, Picasso, Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards, early Summer, bananas, "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind", the healing power of Rioja, The Smiths, Pink Floyd, The Buzzcocks, the fact that George W Bush is legally prevented from standing for a third term, Mark Rothko, Alexandre Dumas' "The Count of Monte Cristo", the smell of freshly cut grass, birdsong, "Paul's Boutique" by the Beastie Boys, properly served Guinness, Bill Hicks, the work of Alan Moore, Frank Capra, Chris Morris, the Lakes, Dales, and Peaks, Led Zeppelin, random play facilities on an MP3 player, Jackson Pollock, early to mid period Stevie Wonder, just about anything on Motown, and raging against the dying of the light, and the Pet Shop Boys (an ungrateful nation shrugs its shoulders with indifference - what is WRONG with you people!?). And seeing Jarvis Cocker, and hearing him speak, makes me proud to be British. By which I mean that cool mix of intelligence, style, and self-deprecation.
Things I can't stand, and believe me, this is not an exhaustive list, include people who talk loudly on their mobile phones on public transport - its not only rude, we're also not interested in your amazingly dull lives, and it's arrogant to think that we might be, you sickos; laziness; "can't do" attitudes; right wing thinking (an oxymoron if ever I heard one); people who think that they have the answer to everything for whatever political/religious reason -here's a newsflash - the world and beyond is just too complex for that, so just give it up; hard sums; avocado; overrated things (Van Morrison and Jennifer Aniston spring most readily to mind, along with Oasis - the bastard hybrid of the worst bits of The Beatles and Slade) and the term "genius" being bandied about without enough thought (though I am probably as guilty of that as anyone else). And bad poetry, especially on people's profiles. If I want bad poetry, I will go to Hallmark. And I don't believe world peace is possible, but the torture and killing of Westlife would be a good start. And whilst the branding iron and rope and pliers are still hot/warm/hot, let's do the same to Chris Moyles (people outside the UK won't know who Chris Moyles is. They don't have any concept of how lucky they are).
Last rented - "The Kingdom" - i honestly could not work out this film's politics. I dont mind either way, would just prefer it to have some - otherwise, what is the point of setting it in the time and place it is set? So that made it a bit pizzazy but empty.
Last film seen - "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Fugging Up Your Franchise" - this film is poor. very very poor. the CGI is bad, the main female character appears to be there simply as a brood mare (shame on you Lucas!), the plot is stupid stupid stupid even for genre material, and it has no sense of pace. And "The Incredible Hulk" which is not that bad. and "Wanted" which is sheer house-of-cards bollocks from start to finish, and noisy and violent to boot, and for all those reasons, quite brilliant!
Last album - "attack and release" by the black keys - outstanding - and "on an island" by david gilmour - pass the doobies. and the chocolate.
Currently reading - On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan. The modern master at work.
Last gig - The Futureheads. I was kind of dragged along. I didnt know much about them. I now know that if either the Jam or Big Country are looking for a technically proficient but really rather dull tribute band.........
I'm currently reading Black, white, chinese, spanish, indian, haitain - hear no fear for my radio station.
You can't beat a cup of Yorkshire Tea. I know that sounds parochial. I don't care. Especially since the people who are most likely to criticise are also the ones who won't understand what the word "parochial" means.
We all carry with us the seeds of our own destruction. I am happy to packet some up and sell them on, though, if there are any interested buyers.
"It is characteristic of all committee discussions and decisions that every member has a vivid recollection of them and that every member's recollection of them differs violently from every other member's recollection. Consequently, we accept the convention that the official decisions are those and only those which have been officially recorded in the minutes by the officials, from which it emerges with an elegant inevitability that any decision which has been officially reached will have been officially recorded in the minutes by the officials and any decision which is not recorded in the minutes has not been officially reached even if one or more members believe they can recollect it, so in this particular case, if the decision had been officially reached it would have been officially recorded in the minutes by the officials, and it isn't so it wasn't." |
