I met and married Kathryn Frederick, dragged her to the East Coast and then made good on my promise to bring her back home to the Portland area.

When I am not busy as a marketing research consultant or working on a book (or reading books -- mainly fantasy and science fiction but write nonfiction, including a trade bestseller on self-hypnosis and a couple textbooks), I help Kathryn with Frederick Productions , an Indie label specializing in good-time Americana or Red Newt Records, our label for other cool stuff. Kathryn's primary mission is to keep alive Portland good-time Americana as well as the music of others in our musical "family" centered around her late husband, Jeffrey Frederick (recently inducted into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame) and the Holy Modal Rounders. We are currently releasing the 25th CD on her labels.

My musical tastes run from the eccentric (the above, Bonzos, Fugs, etc.) through the mid60s-70s classics (Dead, SF bands, British Invasion), oldtimey and folk (but not too much bluegrass -- too newfangled for me), blues of course, to the sublime (heck, subscribed to the Philadelphia Orchestra for 20 years). As long as it's interesting. Right now, my top faves are Portland's Freak Mountain Ramblers and the late, lamented Asylum Street Spankers.

I'm a rank amateur old-time banjo picker and far worse guitar picker. Damn good at playing CDs and lps, however.

And to set the record straight, I was never a hippie. I was a precursor -- part of the student counterculture, a head, what can I say, I went to Antioch College in its prime, lived in San Francisco and New York's Lower East Side and avoided disco like the plague.
