I read for myself and also read lots of kid books with my young son. I like American authors, but find that much of my book collection is British and Irish authors, as well as a few from other countries in translation. I prefer books written in the 1920s-1950s and current books that have that feel. Penelope Lively for example. Other modern authors I like are John Mortimer, Robertson Davies, David Sedaris, and Laurie Colwin.
I read about a book a week and read so fast I often forget what I've read. I have a terrible memory for titles and authors, which means I often start to re-read things I've already read and don't realize it until I'm several chapters in (okay, and maybe sometimes not until I'm done with the book!) For me, reading is an escape and also an adventure. I'm not really in it for the critical aspects, although I have a degree in English and I'm sure my old professors would be appalled at my cavalier attitude.
My guilty pleasures are noir mysteries, sci-fi and some fantasy. And Joanna Trollope.
This picture is my grandmother, who was a trumpet player in vaudeville in the late 1930's. She's my idol.
P.S. I've read a few profiles now & I see the common currency is usually music rather than books, so I guess I'll add a couple artists/bands I like, though I'm much more likely to be reading than listening and I don't own an MP3 player (sign of my age, I suppose):
